Created during my residency at the Bonsecours Ceramics Center, this totemic ensemble is a highly spontaneous personal project. While working on the design of the sculptures for the CITY project, I had accumulated many unusable clay slab fragments. I therefore produced small nut- and bolt-like pieces, etc. My goal was to be able to insert them into one another, through accumulation and juxtaposition, without a precise idea of the project’s outcome.
This work presents three slender vertical forms placed side by side on metal bases. Each dark rod is punctuated by a succession of raised geometric elements in coppery and brown tones, evoking gears, rings, or mechanical fragments. The whole creates a play of repetitions and variations, giving the impression of contemporary totems. The contrast between industrial shapes and warm colors lends the sculpture a presence that is both raw and refined, almost ritualistic.
